About Urmi

Urmi was introduced to music at  a very early age. She grew up in India, at the IIT Delhi campus, where her father was a professor, and mother a music teacher, who taught music to many children of the faculty. Knowledge, culture and education were the pillar stones of her family's background, and music was an integral part of her  life.

Her musical training started at a very early age from her mother, Smt. Pranati Bhattacharya. Alongside her mother's teaching, she  also received extensive training in a variety of different Indian musical genres from a number of renowned musicians such as P. D. Saptarishi (a disciple of Padma Bhushan Pt. Krishnarao Shankar Pandit), Satish Bhatia (former Music Director at All India Radio) and Shanti Hiranand (a disciple of Begum Akhtar). Years of comprehensive training under the masters of different genres consolidated her musical knowledge, and broadened her horizon as a versatile singer.

Her musical roots were further strengthened when she met her husband Arun, who is also an accomplished and passionate musician. It was their strong desire to promote Indian music and culture and build a musical community that aspired her to start the Indian music classes. She enjoys working closely with her students and uses creative techniques to bring out the best of their musical talents. With the knowledge and experience that she has acquired over the years, she hopes to inspire her students to evolve as good singers and find their passion in the art-form.

Urmi has performed many times on All India Radio, and has given several live performances in India and US. Her students have also been performing at various community events and shows.

However,  growing up in an environment surrounded by country's  top engineers and scientists made artistic pursuit as a  career an impossible  dream. She went  on to study mathematics and computer science and started a career in computer science, providing corporate trainings in databases.

Her musical roots were reinforced when she met her husband Arun at the IIT campus, where he was a student.  He is also a very passionate  and accomplished musician, both in Indian and western music. It was their strong desire to promote Indian music and culture,  and build a musical community that inspired  her to start her own music school 10 years ago.

Her venture found quick success, and over the years UrmiMusic has built a thriving musical community in Northern New Jersey.  Her strength lies in her simple yet creative approach to teaching, and the close connection she makes with each one of  her students.

Prior to starting her school, Urmi performed many times on All India Radio, and has given  several live performances in India and USA. She stresses the importance of performing to her students as well, who have been performing at various community events and shows, in addition to UrmiMusic's annual winter and summer showcases
